A Time Bomb Ticking

Reading in the local Sun-Herald yesterday about the state of adolescent health, it is very sad to note these statistics from The Australian Institute Of Health And Welfare:
1. 1 in 5 adolescents suffers a mental disorder at sometime
2. 20% have a chronic illness, including diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and obesity.
2. 1 in 3 drinks alcohol to harmful levels
4. When drinking, about 30% participate in risky behaviour such as drink-driving and behaviour that can lead to sexual assault
5. 38% aged 14 to 24 years have used marijuana in the past 12 months
6. 4% of girls will develop an eating disorder; 1 in 10 of those will die
7. 31% of males and 23% of females aged 12 to 24 are overweight or obese
8. Chlamydia increased more than 300% between 1991 and 2001
9. 5% have ADHD
10. 80% are unhappy with their weight and shape.
